SYMPTOMS
The SMSAPM32.exe program may repeatedly quit unexpectedly (crash) with an access violation exception error on Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2.0 Service Pack 5 (SP5) client computers. As a result, you SMS server's SMS_OFFER_STATUS_SUMMARIZER component may contain many message ID 3812 status messages.
CAUSE
This problem may occur when the execution of an advertised program is interrupted or canceled two or more times. When an advertised program is interrupted two or more times, the SMS Advertised Program Manager documents this in the SMSApm32.log file on the client computer. This problem occurs because the following statement in that log file is not formatted correctly:
Interrupted 2 times attempting to execute program program name from package package name, Discarding this program.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem for SMS 2.0 SP5 sites, install the hotfix described in the following KB article:

To resolve this problem for SMS 2.0 SP4 sites, install the hotfix described in the following KB article:

WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, remove the Complete file that is associated with the advertised package from the following folder on the client computers:
%windir%\ms\SMS\Clicomp\Apa\Data\Complete
When you remove the Complete file, the error no longer occurs, and the advertised package is offered for installation again.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
