SYMPTOMS

When you convert a file from an earlier version of Microsoft Money to the Money 2002 format and then try to archive the file by using Money 2002, Money may stop responding (hang) and you may receive the following error message:

Not enough memory available.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the file that is being converted is large or contains several accounts and the hard disk does not have sufficient space to hold the temporary files that are generated during the archival process.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Free hard disk space

To free hard disk space, use the Disk Cleanup Tool. To use the Disk Cleanup Tool, follow these steps.

Note Disk Cleanup is available in Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition, Microsoft Windows 2000, and Microsoft Windows XP.

  1. Click Start, point to Programs (in Windows XP, point to All Programs), point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Cleanup.
  2. In the Select Drive dialog box, click to select the drive that you want to clean up, for example: C:\, and then click OK.
  3. On the Disk Cleanup tab, click to select the check boxes next to the files that you want to remove.
  4. Click OK.

Method 2: Reduce the file size

To reduce the size of the Money file that you want to archive, you can save the Investment data separate from the Regular data, or if the file contains multiple accounts save each account out separately. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. On the File menu, click Export.
  2. Click Loose QIF, and then click OK.
  3. Type filename.qif. In this example, filename is the unique file name that you want to use for the exported file.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Click either Regular or Investment for the type of account that you are exporting, and then click OK.
  6. In the Account List box, click to select the account that you want to export the data from, and then click Continue.
  7. When you are prompted that the export is complete, click OK.
  8. Repeat steps 1 through 7 for each account in the file.

After you export all the accounts, close the file and create a new separate account for each account that you exported. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Account List.
  2. On the File menu, click New, and then click Account.
  3. Follow the instructions on the screen to create a new account.
  4. Open the new account.
  5. On the File menu, click Import.
  6. Follow the instructions on the screen to import the Temporary .qif file that you exported.
  7. After the import is through, save the account.
  8. After the file is saved, archive the file.
  9. Repeat steps 1 through 8 for each account that you exported.

Method 4: Archive the file before you convert the file to Money 2002

You can archive the file by using an earlier version of Money before you open the file in Money 2002.
