SYMPTOMS
You can use the Output Queue Length performance counter in the Network Interface object type for network adapter monitoring or Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) querying. Typically, the Output Queue Length value is not higher than 0 (zero). If it does reach a value higher than zero, it typically returns to zero quickly. Values that are higher than 2 may indicate that there are delays.
The Network Driver Interface Specification (NDIS) implementation queues the SNMP query requests. As a result, the Output Queue Length value is typically always at 0. However, in a symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) computer, the value may be much higher than 2 in Performance Monitor, in System Monitor, or in a returned SNMP query.
CAUSE
TCP/IP maintains the Output Queue Length counter. NDIS does not. TCP/IP in Windows NT and in Windows 2000 does not use interlocked operations to help guarantee the integrity of its statistics counters.
