"No Smart Card Reader Is Installed" Error Message When You Try to Configure or Use a Smart Card

SYMPTOMS

When you plug a smart card reader into your computer, the computer recognizes the reader and installs the drivers. However, when you try to configure a network connection to use a smart card, or you use a remote access connection configured to use a smart card for authentication, you receive an error message similar to the following:

Cannot load dialog.

Error 764: No smart card reader is installed.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if you use a universal serial bus (USB) smart card reader.

This issue may be caused by the default third-party smart card reader driver that is included with Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4). This issue has been reported to occur with the following smart card reader:

  • USB smart card readers from ActivCard.


RESOLUTION
