SYMPTOMS

When you try to create a new Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP) virtual directory by using an Exchange 2000 public folder as the NNTP anchor folder, the Information Store process (Store.exe) may quit unexpectedly. You may not be able to publish a public folder by using an NNTP virtual directory. Store.exe may fail silently without generating an error.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if a public folder has a very large number of security permissions assigned to it. In Exchange 2000, security descriptors are used to describe security permissions that are assigned to a public folder. Many security permissions can contribute to large security descriptors. When the NNTP virtual server tries to copy the security descriptor from the public folder into a buffer, the NNTP virtual server does not verify that the buffer is large enough for the size of the security descriptor. Because of this, If the security descriptor is too large for the buffer, Store.exe may fail.

RESOLUTION

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, reduce the overall size of the security descriptors on the public folder that you want to publish by using NNTP. To do this, change the top-level public folder permissions to remove all unnecessary role holders, and then propagate these new permissions to the sub-folders.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

Even after you install the fix that this article describes, if the security descriptors for the public folder are too large, NNTP cannot host the public folders. NNTP then unsuccessfully tries to rebuild the NNTP indexes and generates an error. However, the information store does not stop responding (crash).
