You receive the "SharePoint Team Services failed to provision" error message when you try to install SharePoint Team Services

Article ID: 818845

Article Last Modified on 2/5/2007

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Project Server 2002
  • Microsoft Office Project Web Access
  • Microsoft SharePoint Team Services

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install SharePoint Team Services from the SharePoint Configuration Wizard in Microsoft Project Server, you may receive the following error message:

Microsoft Project Server: SharePoint Configuration Wizard

Setup error:

SharePoint Team Services failed to provision STSWebSiteName.

The reasons could be:

You have entered incorrect database connection information. The specified virtual server cannot be extended by SharePoint.

You can investigate the problems via "Microsoft SharePoint Administrator" in Administrator Tools.

To fix the problem, remove SharePoint Team Services from your server and try the installation again.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur when you provision a Web site that contains host headers for SharePoint Team Services. Host headers allow you use one Internet Protocol (IP) address to host multiple Web sites with different domain names. Additionally, host headers can help prevent the unexpected substitution of the IP address for the host name in the URL of the Web site.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, temporarily remove the host headers from the Web site in Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) . To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type Inetmgr in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. Right-click your Web site for SharePoint Team Services, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the Web Site tab, and then click Advanced.
  4. Select your host header, and then click Remove.
  5. On the IP Address drop-down menu, click All Unassigned, and then click OK.
  6. Expand the Web site where you initially tried to install SharePoint Team Services.
  7. Locate a folder that has the name, MS_ProjectServer_PublicDocuments. If the folder exists, right-click the folder, and then click Delete.
  8. Start Setup.exe from the Microsoft Project Server CD-ROM.
  9. Click SharePoint Configuration Wizard to provision SharePoint Team Services for Microsoft Project Server.

Note If you have previously installed SharePoint Team Services and extended the site, but you did not run the SharePoint Configuration Wizard, you may receive the following error message:

    Failed to Create Database Role

If you receive this error message, click OK until the error message disappears. This behavior occurs because the Database Role was previously created and the wizard is now trying to write the database role.
  10. After the wizard has completed, you will receive a confirmation screen, that states the following:
    • Server Name
    • Web Server Port
    • SharePoint Administration Port
    • Database Server Name
    • Database Name
Make note of the information appears on the confirmation screen.
  11. Finish connecting SharePoint Team Services to Microsoft Project Web Access.
