SYMPTOMS

The Cluster service may randomly stop working, and exception errors may be written to the Cluster log file.

CAUSE

This problem is caused by a race condition between two threads in the remote procedure call (RPC) runtime.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4.

Theoretically, this problem might occur in any RPC-enabled program. However, Microsoft has seen this problem occur only in the Cluster service. When this problem occurs, the Cluster service records entries that are similar to these in the Cluster log file:
