SYMPTOMS

When you install Microsoft Works Suite 2003, you may receive the following error message:

Setup has detected other programs running which may interfere with installation.

When you install Microsoft Works Suite 2004, you may receive the following error message:

Setup has found the following programs open on your computer. Before you continue installing Microsoft Works Suite 2004, close the open programs.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because other programs are still running in the background on the computer.

RESOLUTION

Important These steps may increase your security risk. These steps may also make your computer or your network more vulnerable to attack by malicious users or by malicious software such as viruses. We recommend the process that this article describes to enable programs to operate as they are designed to, or to implement specific program capabilities. Before you make these changes, we recommend that you evaluate the risks that are associated with implementing this process in your particular environment. Method 1: Quit all programs

To resolve this issue, quit all programs that are open during installation. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. On the taskbar, click the program that is running.
  2. On the File menu, click Exit.

Some programs, such as Antivirus programs, put an icon in the notification area.

  1. Right-click the icon in the notification area.
  2. Click Exit if it is available.

These steps prevent issues that are associated with files being copied by the Setup program, but may be in use by programs that are currently running on your computer.

Method 2: End task on all programs that are running in the background

Other programs may be running in the background and do not have an icon on the taskbar or in the notification area. To quit these programs, you must use the Task Manager to end each task.

Microsoft Windows XP or Microsoft Windows 2000

  1. Note the programs that the Microsoft Works Suite Installation program indicates must be closed.
  2. Press CTRL + ALT + DEL.
  3. Click Task Manager, and then click the Processes tab.
  4. Select a program that you made a note of in step 1.
  5. Click End Process.
  6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for each program that you noted in step 1.
  7. Quit Task Manager.


You return to the Works Suite Installation program.

  1. Click Back.
  2. Select the type of installation of Works Suite that you want to perform, click Next, and then complete the installation process.
  3. After Works Suite is installed, restart your computer.

Microsoft Windows 98 or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me)

  1. Note the programs that the Works Suite Installation program indicates must be closed.
  2. Press CTRL + ALT + DEL.
  3. Select a program that you made a note of in step 1.


The programs are listed by their file name, instead of by their full name--for example: Norton Anti Virus is listed as "Navapw32.exe".

  1. Click End Task, and then click Yes if you are prompted to do so.
  2. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for each program that you noted in step 1.
  3. Quit Task Manager.


You return to the Works Suite Installation program.

  1. Click Back.
  2. Select the type of installation of Works Suite that you want to perform, click Next, and then complete the installation process.
  3. After Works Suite is installed, restart your computer.

Note An antivirus program is designed to help protect your computer from viruses. You must not download or open files from sources that you do not trust, visit Web sites that you do not trust, or open e-mail attachments when your antivirus program is disabled.

Method 3: Clean boot your computer

If the first two methods do not resolve the issue, you must restart Microsoft Windows in what is named a "clean boot" mode. This is a way to start your computer with all the programs that you do not require turned off. Each version of Windows has a different clean boot procedure. After Works Suite is installed, restart your computer.
