SYMPTOMS

You may experience one or more of the following symptoms on your Microsoft Exchange 2000 server:

  • Exchange 2000 Server unexpectedly stops responding (crashes) and the following event appears in the Application log of the Event Viewer:
    Date:     <date>        Source:   ESE
    Time:     <time>        Category: General
    Type:     Error         Event ID: 485
    User      N/A
    Computer: <computername>
    
    Description:
    Information Store (2036) An attempt to delete the file "D:\MDBDATA\E00tmp.log" failed
    with system error 5 (0x00000005): "Access is denied. ". The delete file operation 
    will fail with error -1032 (0xfffffbf8).
  • Exchange 2000 Server stops responding (hangs) and the following event appears in the Application log of the Event Viewer:
    Date:     <date>        Source:   MSExchangeIS
    Time:     <time>        Category: General
    Type:     Error         Event ID: 9518
    User      N/A
    Computer: <computername>
    
    Description:
    Error 0xfffffc01 starting Storage Group /DC=COM/DC=EXAMPLE/CN=CONFIGURATION/
    CN=SERVICES/CN=MICROSOFT EXCHANGE/CN=Organization/CN=ADMINISTRATIVE GROUPS/
    CN=AdministrativeGroupName/CN=SERVERS/CN=Computername/CN=INFORMATIONSTORE/CN=FIRST STORAGE GROUP 
    on the Microsoft Exchange Information Store. 
    Storage Group - Initialization of Jet failed.
  • When you try to restart the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service, you are unsuccessful and the following event appears in the Application log of the Event Viewer:
    Date:     <date>        Source:   ESE
    Time:     <time>        Category: General
    Type:     Error         Event ID: 490
    User      N/A
    Computer: <computername>
    
    Description:
    Information Store (2148) An attempt to open the file "D:\MDBDATA\E00.chk" for read / write access
    failed with system error 5 (0x00000005): "Access is denied. ".  
    The open file operation will fail with error -1032 (0xfffffbf8).
  • When you log on to the computer locally, and you try to perform a write operation to the hard disk, you receive an error message that is similar to the following:

    Access denied.

These behaviors occur even though you have confirmed that sufficient permissions exist for all write operations to the hard disk(s).

CAUSE

This issue may occur if you have the Trend Micro ServerProtect version 5.3 antivirus program installed on the Exchange server.

If the Trend Micro antivirus program is enabled, you may not be able to write to the hard disk even though you have sufficient permissions to do so.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, contact Trend Micro to obtain a possible update for the antivirus program.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, turn off the Trend Micro antivirus program.
