APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Standard Edition

SYMPTOMS

Your Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server-based computer may generate a larger number of transaction log files than you expect during typical operation. Because of this behavior, you may experience a performance degradation of your Exchange server. When you perform additional troubleshooting of this problem, you determine that many new search folders are being created for the free/busy public folder.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if both of the following conditions exist:

  • Clients that are running Microsoft Outlook perform requests for free and busy calendaring information.

-and-

  • The client computers use a different locale than the Exchange Server computer.

When a search request (with or without a restriction) runs against a folder in the Web Store, the Web Store caches the view that it creates on that folder to reuse it in case that search is executed again. By default, the Web Store caches up to 11 views for a particular folder. However, cached views are not used for servers and clients with different locales. When Outlook creates a view to find or update Free or Busy (FB) messages, it uses the codepage of the client instead of the default codepage (for example, instead of the English codepage). Because search folders are codepage distinct, Exchange 2000 Server must generate a new search folder for each codepage that the clients use.
