WD2002: Hyperlink in Body of "Merge to E-mail" Message Merges as Plain Text

SYMPTOMS

When you use Microsoft Word 2002 to merge to e-mail messages in HTML mail format, if the body of your e-mail message contains a hyperlink, the hyperlink merges as plain text.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Office XP. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

After you install the latest Office XP service pack, add the following registry key if the registry key does not already exist:

KEY: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Word\Options
DWORD VALUE: MailMergeSpecialChars
SETTING: 1


To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Quit all programs that are running.
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
  4. Expand the Windows registry to locate the following registry key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Word\Options

  5. On the Edit, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  6. Type MailMergeSpecialChars, and then press ENTER.
  7. Right-click MailMergeSpecialChars, and then click Modify.
  8. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
  9. On the Registry menu, click Exit.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Office XP Service Pack 2.
