Stop Error or Error Message After You Install Windows 2000 SP3: Winlogon.exe has Generated Errors and will be Shut Down

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3), you may experience one of the following symptoms:

  • When you restart your computer, you receive the following error message:

    Winlogon.exe has generated errors and will be shut down

    The computer then restarts to repeat the error message, and then restarts again.
  • You receive the following Stop error message on a blue screen:

    Stop 0x0000007B INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE

    Note The Stop error may also occur when you try to remove Windows 2000 SP3.


CAUSE

This problem may occur if antivirus software is running on your computer when you install Windows 2000 SP3.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue:

Warning If you choose to use the information that is contained in this article to repair a Windows 2000 Server-based computer that is a domain controller, note that the repair process overwrites the Active Directory database. Before you use the repair process, you must backup the Winnt\Ntds\Ntds.dit Active Directory database. For more information about how to back up the Active Directory, search the Windows Help for "Back Up System State Data".

  1. Insert the Windows 2000 CD-ROM into your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.
  2. Restart your computer. You may have to change your BIOS settings to start your computer from the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer again.


Note If you cannot start from the Windows 2000 CD-ROM, insert Setup disk one floppy disk in the drive, and then restart your computer. For more information about how to create Setup disks, search Windows Help for "makeboot".

  1. When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to repair the installation of Windows 2000.
  2. On the "Repair Options" screen, press R to start the Emergency Repair process.
  3. Press F to perform Fast Repair.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the repair process.
  5. When the computer restarts, again start the computer from the Windows 2000 CD-ROM or the Windows 2000 Setup floppy disks. Make sure that the computer is not started to Windows at this time.
  6. Repeat steps 3 to 7. When the computer restarts, start Windows.
  7. Make sure that your antivirus software and all other programs that start automatically are disabled or removed, and then install Windows 2000 SP3.

Note If you choose not to reinstall Windows 2000 SP3 after you perform steps 1 to 8, Windows Installer and Internet Explorer may not work correctly.
