SYMPTOMS

When you upgrade a client from Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2.0 to SMS 2003, the Advertised Programs Manager (SMSapm32.exe) may continue to run after the client components have been removed. Additionally, the following entries are logged to the Smsapm32.log:

SCHED DATA  : Program running beyond its specified estimated run time.~ $$<APM><Wed Jun 12 15:04:29.566 2002><thread=239 (0xEF)>

These symptoms may occur when the upgrade process tries to remove the SMS 2.0 client components and before the SMS 2003 client components are installed.

Note The SMSApm32.exe process uses lots of CPU resources.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if an advertised program is running when the SMSApm32.exe process tries to quit during the upgrade. In this scenario, the SMSApm32.exe process may enter an endless processing loop.
