SYMPTOMS
Every time that you shut down the computer, you may receive the following error message at the Windows is shutting down... screen:
CAUSE
This behavior may occur if you have Symantec Norton Personal Firewall program, which is included with Norton Internet Security, installed. This behavior may occur if you have the Norton Personal Firewall file, Iamapp.exe loaded from the Startup group in the Windows registry.
RESOLUTION
Warning This workaround may make your computer or your network more vulnerable to attack by malicious users or by malicious software such as viruses. We do not recommend this workaround but are providing this information so that you can implement this workaround at your own discretion. Use this workaround at your own risk.
Note A firewall is designed to help protect your computer from attack by malicious users or by malicious software such as viruses that use unsolicited incoming network traffic to attack your computer. Before you disable your firewall, you must disconnect your computer from all networks, including the Internet.
To resolve this issue, configure the Norton Personal Firewall program to start from the Windows Startup folder instead of from the Windows registry. To do this, follow these steps:
- Start Windows Explorer. To do this, right-click Start, and then click Explore.
- Navigate to the following folder location, where
C:is the drive on which Windows is installed:C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp - On the File menu, point to New, and then click Shortcut.
- In the Create Shortcut dialog box, click Browse, and then browse to the following file:
Note Depending on whether you have Norton Personal Firewall or Norton Internet Security installed,
C:\Program Files\Norton Personal Firewall\IAMAPP.EXENorton Personal Firewallmay also be Norton Internet Security Family Edition or another version of Norton Internet Security. - Click OK, and then click Next.
- Type a descriptive name for the shortcut, and then click Finish.
- Quit Windows Explorer.
- Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK.
- Click the Startup tab, click to clear the IAMAPP check box under Startup Item, click Apply, and then click Close.
- Click Restart to restart the computer.
