SYMPTOMS
Any Exchange 2000 user can establish owner permissions on a mailbox if that user causes an access control list (ACL) upgrade path to remove a "zombie" user account. After the ACL upgrade, the permissions change, and the Exchange 2000 user who previously had Publishing Editor rights now has Custom rights that include Owner rights.
In an environment that contains both Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 and Exchange 2000 (a mixed environment), or in an environment that was previously mixed, the ACL of mailboxes and public folders may contain user accounts that are not represented in the Microsoft Active Directory directory service. Such user accounts are "zombie" user accounts.
