APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2.0 Service Pack 1
  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2.0 Service Pack 3
  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2.0 Service Pack 4

SYMPTOMS

Fatal exception error 0xc0000008 may occur in Systems Management Server (SMS) Available Programs Manager (Smsapm32.exe). This is most likely to occur after you restart the computer or when you shut it down. If you have attached a kernel debugger to the computer, the debugger indicates that Smsapm32.exe has used a handle that is not valid.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if you have turned on some global flags in the registry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\GlobalFlag (specifically, the 0x00000100 [Application Verifier] and the 0x40000000 [bad handles detection] flags). You use the GlobalFlag value to control system behavior for debugging purposes. You typically set this by using Gflags.exe or the Application Verifier tool.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next SMS service pack that contains this hotfix.

To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the fix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services phone numbers and information about support costs, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

Note In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a specific update will resolve your problem. The usual support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for the specific update in question.
