Word 5.0: Shading Bleeds into Double Lines

- Microsoft Word for MS-DOS version 5.0

SUMMARY

On many types of printers, if the double line feature is chosen when using the Microsoft Word version 5.0 Format Border command with shading, shading will bleed into the border. This problem is not immediately obvious with a black-and-white printer, but is noticeable with a color printer.

This problem is caused by the method Word uses to determine the shading boundaries. There is no modification that can be made to correct this problem.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word version 5.0. We are researching this problem and will post new information here as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

The two diagrams below illustrate how Word shades half way through the character box of the border characters. The two samples each represent one individual character. The example on the left shows shading with a single line and the example on the right demonstrates a shading with a double line. Because Word doesn’t have the physical height information about the double line, and to prevent the rounding errors that cause an extra black bar in the shading, Word shades to the same point in the character box regardless of single or double bar.
