Summary:
Several code page 850 characters do not transfer correctly when you convert files from some releases of WordPerfect 5.0 to Microsoft Word for Windows. (Note that there have been 12 separate maintenance releases of WordPerfect 5.0). The incorrect character transfers occur due to a problem in WordPerfect’s WP.EXE; WordPerfect has confirmed this to be a problem.
More Information:
When code page 850 characters are entered in WordPerfect by pressing ALT+nnn (where nnn represents the character’s numeric code), code page 850 is used to display the character on the screen (edit mode), but WordPerfect’s own internal character mapping (code page 437) is used to store the character when a file is saved to disk. Given WordPerfect’s behavior, the resulting code page character mapping when converting to Word for Windows is the best result Microsoft’s converter can provide.
To resolve this problem, contact WordPerfect Corporation to receive the latest revision of WordPerfect 5.0, and save the affected files before converting to Microsoft Word for Windows.
