The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 1.0, 1.1, 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, and 2.0c - Microsoft Word for MS-DOS, versions 5.0 and 5.5 - Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 4.0, 5.0, and 5.1 - IBM DisplayWrite, versions 4.1, 4.2, and 5.0

Summary:

Use the following procedure to save a DisplayWrite document in RFT-DCA format when you use DisplayWrite version 4.1, 4.2, or 5.0.

You must first configure DisplayWrite to provide an RFT-DCA End/Save option in DisplayWrite versions 4.1 and 4.2 and to automatically generate an RFT-DCA version of the original document in DisplayWrite version 5.0. The steps for doing this are included at the end of this article.

To Save a Document from DisplayWrite in RFT-DCA Format

  1. Start DisplayWrite and select Startup menu option 1 (Create File) if you want to create a new file, or menu option 2 (Revise File) if you want to modify an existing file.

  2. When you have completed composing and/or editing your DisplayWrite document, press F2 (End/Save).

  3. If you are using DisplayWrite version 4.1 or 4.2, select End/Save menu option 5 (Convert to Revisable-Form Text). DisplayWrite proposes the current filename with an .RFT file extension. Enter the desired filename and press ENTER.

If you are using DisplayWrite version 5.0, choose option 1 (End and Save).

The end result in all three versions of DisplayWrite is that both a native DisplayWrite document and an RFT-DCA version of this document–with the same name and an RFT file extension–are generated.

To Configure DisplayWrite 4.1 and 4.2 to Provide RFT-DCA Save Option

  1. Start DisplayWrite and select Startup menu option 9 (Profiles).

  2. In the Profiles menu, select option 2 (Revise Profile), type the name of your user or system profile, and press ENTER.

  3. In the Revise Profile menu, select option 4 (Revisable-Form Text).

  4. Select Yes to provide Revisable-Form Text save options in the DisplayWrite End/Save menu.

  5. Press ESC once, select option 1 (End/Save), and press ESC once more to return to the DisplayWrite Startup menu.

DisplayWrite 4.1 or 4.2 is now configured to provide Revisable-Form Text as a save option under the End/Save menu.

To Configure DisplayWrite 5.0 to Automatically Save in RFT-DCA Format

  1. Start DisplayWrite and select Startup menu option 9 (Profiles).

  2. In the Profiles menu, select option 2 (Revise Profile), type the name of your user or system profile, and press ENTER.

  3. In the Revise Profile menu, select option 1 (Text…).

  4. In the Text Defaults menu, select option 7 (End and Save).

  5. In the End and Save Defaults dialog, press “Y” to select the Yes setting for both the Paginate Document and Convert to Revisable-Form Text option, and press ENTER once and ESC twice to return to the End/Save menu.

  6. In the End/Save menu, choose option 1 (End and Save).

DisplayWrite 5.0 is now configured to automatically create an RFT-DCA version of your DisplayWrite documents when you choose to End and Save.

More Information:

DisplayWrite 4.1 and 4.2 always propose a .RFT file extension, and DisplayWrite 5.0 automatically applies this extension when saving an RFT-DCA format document. In addition, DisplayWrite will not open an RFT-DCA file unless it has an RFT-DCA extension.

Note: It is recommended that you paginate a DisplayWrite document prior to saving in RFT-DCA format if you subsequently want to open the document in Word. If your document was created in DisplayWrite 4.1 or 4.2, or is a DisplayWrite 5.0 document that does not contain a table of contents, an index, and/or a reference list, pagination can be automated along with the RFT-DCA End/Save option as outlined in configuration step 5 for DisplayWrite 5.0 above.

If your DisplayWrite 5.0 document does contain a table of contents, an index, and/or a reference list, you must fully paginate your document. Failure to do so will result in these elements not being saved in the RFT-DCA output file. Subsequently, they will not appear when the RFT-DCA document is opened in Word.

To Fully Paginate a Document in DisplayWrite 5.0

  1. While composing and/or editing your DisplayWrite document, press CTRL+F7 to access the Paginate Document dialog.

  2. Press PAGE DOWN once to access Paginate Document screen 2 of 2.

  3. Under Resolve Locate For, press “Y” to select the Yes setting for the Tables of Contents, Index, and Reference Lists options, and press ENTER.

DisplayWrite 5.0 now fully paginates your document, and once the status message is returned at the lower left of your screen, that pagination has been completed you can save the file in RFT-DCA format.
