Converting WordPerfect Initial Settings and Codes

Summary:
WordPerfect includes an option for creating initial settings that allow creation of default settings for WordPerfect formats (for example, margin settings) that will affect all subsequently created WordPerfect documents. In addition, an option is included for creating initial settings for one particular document. These options are equivalent in purpose to Word for Window’s NORMAL.DOT and user-defined .DOT files created for specific documents.
Versions of WordPerfect earlier than 5.1 store initial settings and/or document initial codes separately from the actual document file. In version 5.1, all such information is included in the document prefix (header) of each document created.
Currently, the WordPerfect 5.0/5.1 converter CONV-WP5.DLL supplied with Word for Windows does not support conversion of WordPerfect initial settings or document initial codes. Steps for creating a workaround to simulate these settings in Word for Windows follow:
- Create a Word for Windows template (.DOT) file with margin settings, etc. that repeat those defined in the WordPerfect initial settings.
- Convert the document from WordPerfect, save in Word for Windows format, and close the file.
- From the File menu, choose New and choose to use your WordPerfect template.
- From the Insert menu, choose Insert File to insert the converted WordPerfect document.
The margin settings, etc. from the template will now be applied to your document. To retain these settings, save the file before exiting Word for Windows.
