Excel Will Not Translate Lotus 3-D Reference Last reviewed: November 3, 1994 Article ID: Q68499

The information in this article applies to: Microsoft Excel for Windows, version 3.0 SYMPTOMS Microsoft Excel for Windows does not retain a formula that references an array of data where the array(s) includes more the one sheet (ply) of a Lotus 3-D cube. Only the corresponding value comes across correctly. STATUS This problem has been corrected in Microsoft Excel version 4.0. MORE INFORMATION This is not a problem with Microsoft Excel. Microsoft Excel does not handle 3-D referencing and alerts you that it can't read a 3-D reference when you try to open a Lotus sheet with a 3-D reference. Microsoft Excel brings across the corresponding values correctly and also generates a note in the cell in which the 3-D reference was located. The note states that the "Formula Failed to Convert." A 3-D reference references multiple sheets without specifying all of the corresponding sheet names. For example, in Lotus versions 3.x, the following formula adds cell A1 of sheets (plies) A, B, C, and D: Sum(A:A1..D:A1) Microsoft Excel does not handle this type of reference; only the value of the formula will translate across.
