PRB: HPFS Extended Attribute Documentation Error in PR Vol 4 PSS ID Number: Q66683 Article last modified on 08-13-1991 PSS database name: O_Os2SDK

1.21

OS/2

Summary:

SYMPTOMS According to the documentation, the “.HPFSNAME” attribute should be used when an application attempts to write a file with a long name to a file system that does not support long names. However, use of this attribute does not produce the proper result.

CAUSE Microsoft has confirmed that the documentation is incorrect on page 27 of the “Microsoft Operating System/2 Programmer’s Reference Volume 4” for version 1.20. Sections 2.3.3.9 and 2.3.3.10 of the documentation incorrectly list “.HPFSNAME” instead of “.LONGNAME”.

This documentation error also occurs in the version of QuickHelp that comes with the Presentation Manager (PM) version 1.21 Programmer’s Toolkit (PTK).

STATUS/RESOLUTION The proper attribute to use is “.LONGNAME”.

We will post new information here when the printed documentation and QuickHelp have been updated to correct this error.
