SUMMARY

There is a difference between the version number of a Novell network operating system and the version number(s) of its one or more Workstation shell revision(s).

NetWare is the name for the Novell network operating system running on the file server. The NetWare version is listed on the label of any of the Novell disks used to install Novell NetWare. It can also be found by typing WHOAMI at the workstation prompt.

The Workstation shell is software that allows the workstation and the file server to communicate. To find the shell version being used, change to the directory on the workstation where either the file ANETx.COM or NETx.COM is located (usually the directory from which you boot – check the AUTOEXEC.BAT file to see what directory the ANET or NET files are called from) and type one of the following:

ANETx i or NETx i

where “x” represents the version of DOS being used.

A message similar to the following will appear:

Advanced NetWare V2.XX-X rev. X - Workstation Shell for PC DOS V3.x (C) Copyright 1983, 198X Novell, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

The V2.XX-X represents the version of the Workstation shell being used.

ANETx i is used to find the shell version on Novell NetWare version 2.00a, and NETx i is used with Novell NetWare 2.10 or later.

MORE INFORMATION

There have been several releases of both NetWare and the Workstation shells and the two version numbers are easily confused. The following table displays with which NetWare versions various workstation revisions have been released:

NetWare Version 2.00a 2.10 2.12 2.15 386 (Network) —– —- —- —- —–

Workstation Version 2.00a 2.10 2.12a 2.15a 3.00 (Shell) 2.00a++ 2.01-1 2.01-2 2.01-3 2.01-4

Note: This is not a comprehensive list, and many customized and/or licensed shell revisions exist. However, this list represents the most common Novell NetWare/Workstation combinations encountered.
