"Failed to initialize the Notes Migration session" error message when you migrate from Lotus Notes by using the Exchange System Management Tools with Exchange 2000 Service Pack 3 installed

SYMPTOMS

Migration from IBM Lotus Notes can be performed from a computer that is running Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server or from a computer that is running the Microsoft Exchange System Management Tools without Exchange 2000 installed. The Microsoft Exchange System Management Tools are installed by using the Microsoft Exchange Migration Wizard.

After you apply Exchange 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3) on a computer that is running the Exchange System Management Tools without Exchange 2000 installed, you may receive the following error message when you migrate from Lotus Notes:

Event: 12010
Source: MSExchangeMig
Type: Error
Description: Failed to initialize the Notes Migration session. Make sure 'ntsmig.ini' is in the 'exchsrvr\bin' directory.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server service pack that contains this hotfix.
