SYMPTOMS

When you make changes to a message, then forward it or reply to it, the changes may be committed to the original message even if you select not to save changes.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Office XP Service Pack 3.

Steps to Reproduce the Behavior

  1. Start Outlook 2000, and then compose a new e-mail message.
  2. Attach several files.
  3. Send the e-mail message to yourself.
  4. Open the received e-mail message, and then delete one attachment.
  5. Click Reply.
  6. Press ALT+TAB to switch back to the original received e-mail message.
  7. Click Close, and then click No when you are prompted to save the changes.
  8. Send the Reply e-mail message.
  9. Open the e-mail message that you received in step 4.

Result: The attachment that was deleted in the Reply e-mail message has also been deleted in the original received e-mail message.
Note: Any changes to the original message, such as editing the subject or body of the message, may also be committed.

WORKAROUND

Click Reply or Forward, and then edit only the new message.
