SYMPTOMS

When you use the archive sink for archiving message in and out of the exchange server and then later view those message copies, the recipient information contained on the Bcc (blind carbon copy) header of those messages does not appear.

Only the recipient information on the To and Cc headers of the message are preserved in the Exchange journal.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server service pack that contains this hotfix.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server.

MORE INFORMATION

This update contains a new version of the archive sink (Archivesink.dll). This new version exposes the following two archiving options:

  • With the first option you can archive the P1 stream of the message.
  • With the second option you can send all message properties including envelope, sender, and recipient information to a log file that is in XML format.

For each archived message, the following three archive files are now created:

Archive.eml
Archive.p1
Archive.xml


Archive.xml is the new file added with this hotfix update. This file contains all message properties, including the message sender and recipient. To install and configure the archive sink, follow these steps.WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

  1. Stop the SMTP service.

    To do this, type the following command from a command prompt, and then press ENTER:

    net stop smtpsvc

  2. From a command prompt, change to the Exchsrvr\bin folder, and then run the following command:

    cscript archivesink_setup.vbs install 1 c:\archivesink

  3. When the archive sink is installed, quit the command prompt.
  4. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
  5. Locate the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Exchange\ArchiveSink\1

  6. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  7. In the New Value #1 box, type Enable Message Logging, and then press ENTER.
  8. Right-click Enable Message Logging, and then click Modify.
  9. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.

    This provides XML-based logging and copies (dumps) the P1 stream to 1 (the binary P1 file).
  10. Quit Registry Editor.
  11. Start the SMTP service.

    To do this, type the following command from a command prompt, and then press ENTER:

    net start smtpsvc
