SYMPTOMS

When you open an Excel 2002 workbook, it may take a long time before the workbook opens.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the workbook contains a large number of VLOOKUP formulas.

Service Pack Information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. By default the fix is on. However, you can turn the fix off. Follow these steps:

  1. Locate and then click the following key in the registry:

    HKey_Current_User/Software/Microsoft/Office/10.0/Excel/Options

  2. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWord.
  3. Type QFE_Charlotte, and then press ENTER.
  4. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
  5. Type 1, and then click OK.



STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Office XP Service Pack 3.
