SYMPTOMS

When you try to start Microsoft FactFinder, you may receive the following error message:

One or more files are missing or not registered properly. Please run Setup again.

After you run Setup or the repair utility, you receive the same error message.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if one or more of the following conditions are true:

  • One or more Encarta files are corrupted because of an error on the hard disk.
  • McAfee.com First Aid (formerly, CyberMedia First Aid) is installed on the computer, and it incorrectly detects missing files.
  • The FactFinder folder is corrupted.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, follow the steps in this three-part resolution.

NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

Part 1: Check Disk for Errors and Repair Problems

Use the Microsoft Windows XP error-checking feature to detect and repair any hard disk problems, such as bad sectors, and then repair the Encarta installation. To do this in Windows XP, follow these steps.

NOTE: If your computer runs a version of Windows that is earlier than Windows XP, use ScanDisk to look for errors. For more information about ScanDisk, see the "References" section later in this article.

Step 1: Check the Disk for Errors

Perform this procedure on the disk on which Encarta is installed and on the disk on which Windows is installed, if they are not on the same disk.

  1. Close all files and quit all programs.
  2. Click Start, click My Computer, and then click the disk that you want to check.
  3. On the File menu, click Properties, and then click the Tools tab.
  4. Under Error-checking, click Check Now.
  5. Under Check disk options, click to select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box, and then click Start.
  6. After the error-checking process is completed, click OK.

NOTE: The volume is not available to perform other tasks while this process runs. All files must be closed. If the volume is currently in use, a message box appears and prompts you to reschedule the disk checking. If you reschedule, the disk checking runs the next time you restart your computer.

If your volume is formatted as an NTFS file system, Windows automatically logs all file transactions, replaces bad clusters, and stores copies of key information for all files on the NTFS volume.

Step 2: Delete Corrupted Files and Repair

  1. Right-click Start, and then click Explore.
  2. Locate the first Encarta file that the error checker reported as having an error, right-click it, and then click Delete.

    Repeat this step for each Encarta file that reportedly contains an error.
  3. Start FactFinder.

    The repair utility starts automatically and installs the missing files.

Part 2: Upgrade or Remove First Aid

If First Aid is not installed on the computer, go to part 3. If First Aid is installed on the computer, and if Encarta functions correctly except for the error message, you can safely ignore the error message if you want, or you can upgrade First Aid or remove it.

McAfee.com offers periodic updates for First Aid that allow it to correctly identify new versions of software. Visit the McAfee.com Web site to look for an update. To remove First Aid, follow the instructions that are provided by McAfee.com.

Part 3: Repair the Corrupted Encarta Installation

Follow these steps to delete the FactFinder folder and then repair the Encarta installation:

  1. Right-click Start, and then click Explore.
  2. Locate the FactFinder folder, right-click it, and then click Delete.

    Click Yes to confirm the folder deletion.
  3. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  4. If you are in Classic view, click Switch to Category View under Control Panel in the left pane.
  5. Click Add or Remove Programs.
  6. In the list of currently installed programs, click the Encarta program that you want to repair, and then click Change.
  7. Click Next.
  8. Click Repair, and then click Next.
  9. Click Install.
  10. Follow the on-screen instructions, and then restart the computer.
