SYMPTOMS

When you use Riprep.exe to upload a Windows XP Professional image to a Remote Installation Services (RIS) server, you may receive the following error message:

Missing CD Image on Server

The RIS server to which you are attempting to post this installation does not contain the correct CD-based image. The version of the CD-based image on the server must match the version of the system you are attempting to image[Version 5.1 Build 2600, Language English]. Please either select a different RIS server to post this installation to or add the corresponding CD-based image to the current RIS server.

CAUSE

This error may occur if you install a hotfix that updates Ntoskrnl.exe. As of June 12, 2003, the following hotfixes may cause this problem:

317277 You Receive a "System Has Recovered from a Serious Error" Message After Every Restart

330512 The Processor Performance State Is Not Restored to the Maximum State If the CPU Runs at 100 Percent

819634 You May Experience Performance Issues After You Install the 811493 (MS03-013) Package on Your Windows XP S819634-Based Computer

811493 MS03-013: Buffer Overrun in Windows Kernel Message Handling Could Lead to Elevated Privileges

826939 Update Rollup 1 for Windows XP Is Available

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, remove the appropriate hotfix and then run Riprep.exe to upload the image.

To deploy the hotfix in a Riprep image, install the hotfix by adding an entry to the Riprep.sif file:

[GuiRunOnce]
"%windir%\qnnnnnn.exe /q"

Note The Riprep.sif file is located in the following folder:

RemoteInstall\Setup\English\Images\Imagename\I386\Templates\

You must copy the hotfix to this location. When an administrator logs in (automatically or manually), the fix will be applied and the computer will restart.

Note This issue only occurs if you run Riprep.exe on a Windows XP Professional computer that does not have Service Pack 1 (SP1) installed, and if no Windows XP Professional SP1 flat CD-ROM image is on the RIS server. The recommended solution is to upgrade the computer to Windows XP SP1. Windows XP SP1 includes this fix. Also, add a Windows XP SP1 flat CD-ROM image to the RIS server, run Riprep.exe, and then upload the image.

MORE INFORMATION

If you experience this problem because of the hotfix that is described in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 317277, resolve this problem by upgrading the Riprep image to Windows XP SP1 and adding a Windows XP SP1 flat CD-ROM image to the RIS server. If you are encountering this problem because of other hotfixes, you may resolve this problem in the same manner after the service pack that includes the appropriate hotfix is released.
