SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You want to view the properties of the Internet Mail Service from a server that is running Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5. However, the properties of the Internet Mail Service do not exist on the server that is running Exchange Server 5.5. When you try to view the properties of the Internet Mail Service, you receive the following error messages.

Error message 1

Extension SMTP could not be loaded. A problem occurred with the extension .DLL file, possibly due to memory shortage. Close some applications or windows, and try again.

Microsoft Exchange Administrator ID no: c10312c6

Error message 2

Extension 'SMTP' could not be loaded. The specified module could not be found.

Microsoft Windows NT ID no: 0xc002007e

CAUSE

This issue can be caused by a problem with the network basic input/output system (NetBIOS) name resolution or with the Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) name resolution. These name resolution problems prevent a connection to the Exchange server on which the Internet Mail Service resides.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, correct the NetBT or WINS name resolution problem that is preventing the connection to the Exchange server on which the Internet Mail Service resides. Use the following methods to determine whether the problem is with the NetBT name resolution or with the WINS name resolution:

  • Try to map a drive to the Exchange server on which the Internet Mail Service resides.
  • Examine your WINS server database for incorrect or outdated static mappings.
