Event ID 9582 messages are logged when you run SharePoint Portal Server 2001 on Windows 2000 Server

SYMPTOMS

If you are running SharePoint Portal Server 2001 on Windows 2000 Server, the following event ID messages may be logged in the Application event log:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: MSExchangeIS
Event Category: Performance
Event ID: 9582
Date: 1/1/2002
Time: 12:00:00 AM
User: N/A
Computer: SERVERNAME
Description: The virtual memory necessary to run your Exchange server is fragmented in such a way that normal operation may begin to fail. It is highly recommended that you restart all Exchange services to correct this issue.

Description: The virtual memory necessary to run your Exchange server is fragmented in such a way that performance may be affected. It is highly recommended that you restart all Exchange services to correct this issue.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, perform one of the following procedures that applies to the type of server that you are using:

  • If the server is running Windows 2000 Server, remove the /3gb switch from the Boot.ini file.


-or-

  • If the server is running Windows 2000 Advanced Server and if it has more than 1 gigabyte (GB) of RAM, make sure that the Boot.ini file contains the /3gb switch.

If you use the /3gb switch, there must be at least 1 GB of physical memory available on the computer.
