SYMPTOMS
If you use Internet Explorer 5.5 or 6 with an automatic configuration (.ins) file that includes custom zone settings, you may receive "Access denied" or "Permission denied" scripting error messages while you browse some Web sites. If you remove zone customization from the automatic configuration file, the problem does not occur.
CAUSE
This problem is another symptom of the issue that is described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:
286338 Internet Explorer May Improperly Prompt a User for Credentials
A fix for this issue is available in Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 2 (SP2). However, this fix has not been ported to Internet Explorer 6.
WORKAROUND
To work around this issue, use group policies or use a separate .reg file to customize zone settings.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
MORE INFORMATION
This issue may occur under the following conditions:
- The automatic configuration file defines custom trusted sites.
- The Web address that you access belongs to the Trusted Sites zone.
- The Web page that you access includes frames. The scripting error messages occur when cross-frame scripting is used. For example: top.document.frames(1) is called from frame(0).
