SYMPTOMS
When you print a Microsoft Visio drawing to a Hewlett-Packard (HP) LaserJet 4050n printer or HP Color LaserJet 5 printer, the printed drawing does not appear as you expect. Instead, one or more of the following conditions are true:
- The drawing has missing objects or is blank.
- Graphics are printed without accompanying text or are arranged incorrectly on the page.
- When you print to the HP Color LaserJet 5 printer, objects are printed in black and white instead of in color.
RESOLUTION
To troubleshoot and resolve this problem, use one of the following methods, as appropriate to your printer.
HP Color LaserJet 5
If you use an HP Color LaserJet 5 printer, follow these steps:
- Turn off background printing. To do so:
- Start Visio and open the drawing that you want to print.
- Click the tab of the drawing page that you want to print.
- On the File menu, click Page Setup.
- Click the Page Properties tab, click None in the Background box, and then click OK.
- On the File menu, click Print, and then click OK.
If this procedure does not resolve the problem, contact HP to obtain the latest drivers that are available for the printer. To do so, visit the following HP Web site:

HP LaserJet 4050n Printer
If you use an HP LaserJet 4050n printer, use one of the following methods:
Method 1: Use the HP LaserJet IIIsi or 4si Printer Driver
To install the HP LaserJet IIIsi or 4si printer driver, follow these steps.
NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
- Click Start, point to Control Panel, and then click Printers and Faxes.
- Right-click your printer, and then click Properties.
- Click the Advanced tab, and then click New Driver.
- In the Add Printer Diver Wizard dialog box, click Next.
- Under Manufacturers, click HP.
- Under Printers, click HP LaserJet IIIsi or HP LaserJet 4si.
- Click Next, and then click Finish.
Method 2: Use the HP LaserJet 4050 PCL 5e or PCL 6 Printer Driver
