SYMPTOMS

If you select a large number of Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server recipients in the Select Names dialog box in Outlook 2002, you may receive one or both of the following error messages:

The operation failed.

-and-


The action could not be completed.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the Microsoft Outlook client cannot interpret the error condition that Exchange 2000 Server returns.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Office XP. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

WORKAROUND

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Office XP Service Pack 2 (SP-2).

MORE INFORMATION

This problem does not occur in the following scenarios:

  • If there are public folders or distribution lists in the Global Address List.
  • If you are working in a Microsoft Exchange 5.5 Service Pack 4 environment.
  • If you select multiple users from the Contacts folder.

The problem also occurs in the versions of Microsoft Outlook that are earlier than Outlook 2002.
