CAUSE

This behavior may occur when you have an antivirus program installed and the antivirus program is damaged. This may occur for one or more of the following reasons:

  • You reinstall or restore Exchange 2000 Server from backup, but you do not reinstall the antivirus program.
  • You remove the antivirus program, but the removal of the program is incomplete or damaged.

You may also experience this behavior if you install an Exchange 2000 Server service pack that is incompatible with the antivirus program.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use Registry Editor to turn off virus scanning, and then remove the antivirus program. To do this, follow these steps.

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. Browse to the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeIS\VirusScan

  3. On the Registry menu, click Export Registry File.
  4. In the File name box, type virusscan, and then click Save.

NOTE: If you later need to restore this registry key, you can do so by double-clicking the Virusscan.reg file that you saved.
  5. In the right pane of the Registry Editor window, right-click the Enabled value, and then click Modify.
  6. In the Value data box, type 0 (zero), and then click OK.
  7. Quit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.
  8. Remove the antivirus program.
  9. Reinstall the Exchange 2000 Server service pack (if you previously installed a service pack).
  10. Reinstall the antivirus program.

NOTE: Before you reinstall the antivirus program, contact the program vendor for possible updates or patches. For information about how to contact computer software vendors, click the appropriate article number in the following list to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
