SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Money, you receive an error message similar to the following

Error 1911 - Could not register type library for file C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Investor\filename

where filename is the name of the .ocx file (for example, Inv8.ocx, Inv9.ocx, Inv10.ocx, Inv12.ocx, or Inv13.ocx).

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if an .ocx file is corrupted or not installed.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use method 1 first, and if that doesn't resolve the issue, use method 2. If method 2 doesn't resolve the issue, use method 3.

Method 1: Rename the Corrupted Files and Reinstall Money

NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

  1. Click Start, and then click Search.
  2. Click All Files and Folders.
  3. In the All or part of the file name box, type inv*.ocx.
  4. In the Look in list, click Local Hard Drives (C:) under My Computer, and then click Search. Under More Advanced Options, make sure to select search hidden files or folders.

NOTE: If you installed Money to a different drive, click the appropriate location.
  5. When the search process is complete, right-click any file that is found, and then click Rename.
  6. Rename the file and give it the extension ".old."
  7. If you are prompted to confirm, click Yes.
  8. If the search finds more than one file, repeat steps 5 through 7 to rename each file that appears.
  9. Insert the Money CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive.
  10. If the Money installation program starts automatically, follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

If the Money installation program does not start automatically, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
    2. Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
    3. Click Add New Programs.
    4. Click CD or Floppy.
    5. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation process.

NOTE: If method 1 does not resolve this issue, continue to method 2.

  1. To upgrade MDAC, follow these steps:
    1. Start your Web browser, and then visit the following Microsoft Web site:
    2. Click the latest version of Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC), and then follow the on-screen instructions to download and install the program.
  2. To upgrade Microsoft Jet Components, follow these steps:
    1. Visit the following Microsoft Web site:
    2. Click the latest version of Microsoft Jet, and then follow the on-screen instructions to download and install the program.
  3. Install Money by following steps 9 and 10 in method 1.

NOTE: If method 2 does not resolve this issue and your computer runs Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition (SE), or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me), continue to method 3.

Method 3: Change the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM Drive Cache Setting and Remove DMA

NOTE: Use this method only if your computer runs Windows 98, Windows 98 SE, or Windows Me. You cannot change the drive cache setting in Microsoft Windows 2000 or Microsoft Windows XP.

NOTE: Before you change any of the settings in this step, make a note of the current settings so that you can return the drive to these settings later in this procedure.
    1. On the desktop, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
    2. Click the Device Manager tab.
