You Cannot Install the December 13th, 2001 Security Update from the Windows Update Web Site

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to download and install the critical December 13th, 2001 Security Update from the Microsoft Windows Update Web site, you may experience the following behavior:

  • The installation stops responding (hangs).

    -or-
  • You receive the following message in your browser window:

    The following updates were not installed. To try again, click the Back button below.

As a result, you cannot install the December 13th, 2001 Security Update.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if there is a version conflict between Microsoft Internet Explorer files.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, remove all Internet Explorer Setup files, and then reinstall Internet Explorer. To do this, follow these steps.

NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

  1. Click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders.
  2. In the Look in box, click drive, where drive is the letter of the drive on which Windows is installed.
  3. In the Search for files or folders named box, type ie6setup.exe or ie5setup.exe (as appropriate to the version of Internet Explorer that is installed on your computer), and then click Search Now.
  4. In the Search Results list, right-click ie6setup.exe or ie5setup.exe (as appropriate), and then click Delete.
  5. Click Yes when you are prompted to confirm the file deletion.
  6. Close the Search Results window.
  7. Start Windows Explorer; browse to and then select the Windows Update Setup Files folder.

    This folder may be located in one of the following locations (as appropriate to the operating system that you are running), where drive is the letter of the drive on which Windows is installed:
    • Windows 2000:

      drive:\Winnt\Windows Update Setup Files

      drive:\Windows Update Setup Files

    • Windows Millennium Edition (Me) and Windows 98:

      drive:\Windows\Windows Update Setup Files

      drive:\Windows Update Setup Files

  8. Delete the contents of the Windows Update Setup Files folder. To do this, click Select All on the Edit menu, and then press DELETE.
  9. Click Yes when you receive the message to confirm the multiple-file deletion.
  10. Quit Windows Explorer.
  11. Download and then reinstall Internet Explorer. To do this, browse to the following Microsoft Web site, (as appropriate to the version of Internet Explorer that you want to reinstall):
  12. After you reinstall Internet Explorer and restart your computer, download and then install the December 13th, 2001 Security Update. To do this, browse to the following Microsoft Web site.
  13. When the installation of the update is completed, click Yes in response to the message to restart your computer.
  14. Browse to the following Microsoft Web site to verify that the update is successfully installed:
