BUG: Files Copied from a Web Folder Result in 0-Byte File

SYMPTOMS

When you copy an item from a Web folder, the file appears at the destination, but the file size is 0 bytes. Similarly, when you open a file from a Web folder, the file may appear to be empty.

CAUSE

This problem may occur when the Temporary Internet Files folder in Microsoft Internet Explorer is full, and you use version 1.5 or earlier of the Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Internet Publishing.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, use either of the following methods:

• Increase the size of the Internet Explorer cache. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start Internet Explorer.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
  3. On the General tab, click Settings.
  4. In the Amount of disk space to use text box, increase the amount of space that is allocated for the Internet Explorer cache, and then click OK.
  5. Click OK in the Internet Options dialog box.
• Clear the contents of the Internet Explorer cache. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start Internet Explorer.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
  3. On the General tab, click Delete Files, and then click OK in the dialog box that appears.
  4. In the Internet Options dialog box, click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

The OLE DB Provider for Internet Publishing versions 1.5 and earlier use the Internet Explorer cache to temporarily store files that are opened from a Web folder. When the cache is full, an entry is created in the list, but the file is not saved. When the file is copied out of the cache, it is created in the destination folder, but the file size is 0 bytes.

NOTE: This problem does not occur with version 2.0 of the OLE DB Provider for Internet Publishing. Version 2.0 of the provider uses its own cache to store files, and does not use the cache in Internet Explorer. Version 2.0 of the provider currently ships with Microsoft Office XP and the Microsoft .NET Framework.

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

1. Start Internet Explorer.
2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
3. On the General tab, click Settings.
4. For Amount of disk space to use, set the value to 1, click OK, and then click OK in the Internet Options dialog box.
5. Browse to several Web pages until the cache size is greater than 1 MB. To verify the space that is allocated in the cache, use Windows Explorer to display the Temporary Internet Files folder.
6. On the File menu, click Open.
7. Select Open as Web Folder, and then type a valid URL to a Web folder in the Open text box. Click OK to open the Web folder.
8. Drag a file from the Web folder to the desktop.
9. View the properties for the file. Note that the file size is 0 bytes.
