SYMPTOMS

When you restart your Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server computer after you install Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 1 (SP1), the Exchange Server Information Store (Store.exe) may cause an access violation and stop responding. A Dr. Watson log file and a User.dmp file that contains the following information may be generated:

CAUSE

This behavior can occur when you install Exchange 2000 Server SP1 on a server on which Symantec's Norton AntiVirus for Microsoft Exchange is installed.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, stop the Norton AntiVirus for Microsoft Exchange service, and then restart the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service. To do so, perform the following steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Services.
  3. In the Name list, right-click NAVMSE, and then click Stop on the shortcut menu that appears.
  4. Right-click Microsoft Exchange Information Store, and then click Start on the shortcut menu that appears.
  5. Right-click Microsoft Exchange POP3, and then click Start on the shortcut menu that appears.
  6. Right-click Microsoft Exchange IMAP4, and then click Start on the shortcut menu that appears.
  7. Quit the Services snap-in.
