The file that contains a PivotTable grows each time that it is saved

SYMPTOMS

When you save, close, and reopen an Excel file that contains a PivotTable, the file may increase in size even if there are no changes to the data in the file. This problem occurs whether or not you save the pivot data with the file, and whether or not the data is external to the Excel file.

CAUSE

Excel re-creates the drawing objects for the page field drop-down lists each time it loads the file; however, Excel does not discard the old unused page fields when it saves the file.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Office XP. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Office XP Service Pack 2 (SP-2).
