SYMPTOMS
When you try to view images on a digital camera in one of the programs listed in the "Applies to" section, you may receive the following error message:
When you try to access items in the gallery or try to create projects in one of the programs listed in the "Applies to" section, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following:
CAUSE
This issue may occur if one or more of the following conditions are true:
- Your desktop display Colors setting or Screen area setting is too high.
- Your Windows Temp folder is full.
- Your Microsoft Picture It! installation is corrupted.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, use the following methods in the order that they appear.
Method 1: Reduce Desktop Display Settings
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click Display.
- On the Settings tab, make a note of the settings for Colors and Screen area.
- In the Colors box or in the Color Palette box, click High Color (16 bit).
- Move the Screen area or Desktop area slider to 800 by 600 pixels.
- Click OK.
- If you are prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.
Method 2: Use Disk Cleanup to Empty the Temp Folder
- Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Cleanup.
- Select the hard disk that contains the Temp folder, and then click OK.
- In the Files to delete box, click to select the Temporary files check box.
- Click OK, and then click Yes.
Method 3: Remove and Reinstall the Program
Use the following methods to remove and reinstall the program.
Remove the Program
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
- On the Install/Uninstall tab, select the program that you want to uninstall, and then click Add/Remove.
- Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to remove the program.
- Click OK, and then close Control Panel.
Remove Program Folders and Registry Keys
Download and run the version of Microsoft Picture It! Publishing 2001 Utility to Remove Program Folders and Registry Keys appropriate to your version of Microsoft Windows.

- To use the Windows CleanUp utility, follow these steps:
- Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Windows Installer Clean Up.
- Select the program that you want to remove, and then click Remove.
- Click OK, and then click Exit.
Perform a Clean Boot of the Computer
To perform a clean boot of the computer, use one of the following methods, depending on your version of Windows.
Windows Millennium Edition (Me)

Windows 98
- Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK.
- On the General tab, click Selective Startup, and then click to clear the following check boxes:
- Process Config.sys File
- Process Autoexec.bat File
- Process Winstart.bat File (if available)
- Process Win.ini File
- Load Startup Group Items
- Click OK.
When you are prompted to restart the computer, do so.

Note To restore your original Startup options, click Normal Startup on the General tab in the System Configuration utility.
Windows 95
- Restart the computer. When you see the "Starting Windows 95" message, press the F8 key, and then select Command Prompt Only on the Startup menu.
- At the command prompt, type win, and then press ENTER. Press and hold down the SHIFT key until the Windows startup sequence is complete.
- Disable any antivirus or disk tool programs that are installed on the computer. For information about how to disable these programs, see the printed or online documentation for the program.
- Quit all running programs except Windows Explorer and Systray. To do this, press CTRL+ALT+DELETE, select the program that you want to quit, and then click End Task.
If you receive a message that states that the program is busy or not responding, click End Task again.
Repeat this step to quit all programs except Windows Explorer and Systray.

Note To restore your original Startup options, restart the computer normally, and then enable any antivirus or disk tool programs installed on the computer. For information about how to enable these programs, see the printed or online documentation for the program.
Reinstall the Program
Insert the CD-ROM for the program that you want to install into your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and then follow the instructions on the screen to reinstall the program.

Important If you installed the version of Picture It! Publishing that ships in the Microsoft Works Suite 2000 or Microsoft Works Suite 2001 package, follow these steps to prevent a licensing agreement error message:
- Right-click Start, and then click Explore.
- Expand the Program Files folder.
- Expand the WorksBkUp folder.
- Click the Works Shared folder.
- On the Edit menu, click Copy.
- Expand the Common Files folder.
- Click the Microsoft Shared folder.
- On the Edit menu, click Paste.
- Click Yes to All to overwrite existing files and folders.
- Quit Windows Explorer.
