SYMPTOMS
While you are administering an Exchange 2000 Server that runs Service Pack 1, the following events may appear in the Application log of Event Viewer:
CAUSE
This issue can occur if the /3GB switch in the Boot.ini file is used incorrectly on a server that runs Exchange 2000 Server.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, take one of the following actions, depending on which type of server you are running:
- If your server is running Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, remove the /3GB option from the Boot.ini file.
- If your server is running Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server and has more than 1 gigabyte (GB) of RAM, make sure that the Boot.ini file contains the /3GB switch.
MORE INFORMATION
The /3GB switch can have a significant effect on memory fragmentation and even contribute to memory fragmentation on a server that runs Windows 2000 Server (but not on a server that runs Windows 2000 Advanced Server or Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server). You should not use this switch with Windows 2000 Server. Regardless of whether the switch is in use, however, memory fragmentation can still occur with the passage of time.
