SYMPTOMS

When you install Office XP, you may receive the following error message:

Error 2744. An internal error has occurred.

When you view the verbose log file created by Office XP Setup, you may find text similar to the following:

NOTE: On a computer running Windows 2000, this issue may not occur if you install Office XP while you are logged on as the Administrator of your system. This issue may occur if you install Office XP while you are logged on as a Power User.

CAUSE

You may receive this error message if there is an issue with the temporary files that are used by Office XP Setup. If this issue occurs on a computer running Windows 2000, it may be caused by a problem with a user profile.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use the following methods in the following order.

Method 1

Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

  1. Click Start, click Find, and then click Files or Folders.
  2. On the Name & Location tab, click in the Named box, and then type msi*.tmp.
  3. In the Look in box, type the path to your temp folder. This is frequently "C:\Windows\temp", but it may be different on your computer, depending on your configuration. To open your current temp folder, click Start, click Run, and then type %temp% in the Open box.
  4. Click Find Now.
  5. On the Edit menu, click Select All.
  6. On the File menu, click Delete.
  7. Run Office XP Setup again.

Method 2: Install as Administrator (Windows 2000 Only)

Install Office XP while you are logged on as the Administrator of your computer.

METHOD 3: Copy the Administrator User Profile to the Default User Profile and All Users Profile (Windows 2000 Only)

NOTE: This method works only if you can successfully install Office XP when you are logged on to the computer as the Administrator.

  1. Log on to Windows 2000 as the Administrator.
  2. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the User Profiles tab.
  4. In the Profiles stored on this computer list, select the administrator profile for the local computer, and then click Copy To.
  5. In the Copy profile to area, click Browse.
  6. In the Browse for Folder dialog box, locate the folder where your default user profile is stored (for example, C:\Documents and Settings\Default User).


NOTE: If you want this to affect the All Users group, locate the All Users folder instead of the Default User folder.

  1. Click OK.
  2. In the Copy To dialog box, click Change.
  3. in the Select User or Group dialog box, select the Everyone group under Name, and then click OK.
  4. Click OK two times, and then restart your computer.
