SYMPTOMS
Non-Internet shortcut files that are located in a user's Favorites folder may be deleted.
CAUSE
The Windows 2000 Internet Explorer\Favorites and Links group policy that is used to deploy administrative Internet shortcuts to clients deletes non-Internet files if it is assigned to users.
Microsoft Internet Explorer stores Internet shortcut files as .url files. Shortcuts to documents or other files are stored as .lnk files. If the Internet Explorer\Favorites and Links group policy is applied, it deletes all files that are not .url files in the Favorites folder.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Internet Explorer 6. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

The English version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later:

NOTE: Before you install this hotfix, install Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 2 (SP2) on the client computers.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, do not apply the Internet Explorer\Favorites and Links policy to assign favorites to users who require files that are not .url files in the Favorites folder.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1.
