This article describes how to locate your saved files or folders after you install Windows Millennium Edition (Me) into a new folder, and how to restore those files to your current Windows Me installation.

When you perform a parallel installation of Windows, you create new folders in which to store your previous Windows information and settings. The following section lists the folder locations of the current Windows installation and the locations of the previously saved configuration.

Folder Name: Files and folders in the root folder of the hard disk drive

Current Location: C:\
Saved Configuration: C:\Oldroot

Folder Name: Windows

Current Location: C:\Windows
Saved Configuration: C:\Oldwin

Folder Name: Program Files

Current Location: C:\Program Files
Saved Configuration: C:\Oldprog

Folder Name: Files or folders on the desktop

Current Location: C:\Windows\Desktop
Saved Configuration: C:\Oldwin\Desktop

Folder Name: Profile when using user profiles

Current Location: C:\Windows\Profiles\User_name
Saved Configuration: C:\Oldwin\Profiles\User_name

Folder Name: Favorites

Current Location: C:\Windows\Favorites
Saved Configuration: C:\Oldwin\Favorites

Folder Name: Cookies

Current Location: C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\NameUser\Mail
(where Name is the name of the user)
Saved Configuration: C:\OldProg\Netscape\Users\NameUser\Mail
(where Name is the name of the user)

Restoring Files to the New Location

Copy Files and Folders

You can copy many files and folders (such as Favorites and Cookies) from the corresponding Oldwin folder to the Windows folder. For example, to restore the contents of the Favorites folder, follow these steps:

Start Microsoft Windows Explorer, and then locate the following folder:

C:\Oldwin\Favorites
On the Edit menu, click Select All.
On the Edit menu, click Copy To Folder.
Locate the following folder, and then click OK:

C:\Windows\Favorites

If you receive a "Confirm Folder Replace" message, click Yes to All if you want to replace the contents of the Favorites folder with the contents of the Favorites folder from your previous installation.
Quit Windows Explorer.

Restore E-mail Messaging

To restore previous e-mail messages and address books, start the messaging program, and then import the files from the corresponding folder locations in the saved Windows configuration. The following table lists some common file extensions for messaging programs.
