SYMPTOMS

When you install Palm Pilot software on a computer that runs Windows 2000, you may receive the following error message:

The selected port COM# is not available. The Palm software will start working when the resources become available.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the specified COM port is being used by another device or if the COM port is shared with another device.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, check the following issues:

  • Verify that the COM port is not in use by another device.
  • Check the BIOS to make sure that the COM port is not set to share the port. According to Palm, the hot sync cradle should be the only device that is able to use that COM port.
  • Make sure that there are no cable connection devices listed under the modem title in Device Manager.
