You Cannot View Security Information When You Are Connected with Virtual Hosting or the Server

Article ID: 309353

Article Last Modified on 2/23/2007

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2001

This article was previously published under Q309353

SYMPTOMS

If you use Web folders to gain access to a workspace, user accounts may not be displayed on the Security tab in the properties of a folder. If you try to add an account, you may receive the following error message:

Object Picker cannot open because it cannot determine whether fully_qualified_domain_name is joined to the domain.

This problem may occur when you try to set the security for any folder that you gain access to in the workspace.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if you reference SharePoint Portal Server with a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) that does not specifically use the computer name. For example, you can correctly configure the security for a folder if you use a URL with the following format gain access to the server:

http://computer_name/workspace

However, you cannot correctly configure the security for a folder if you use a fully qualified domain name (FQDN) URL with the following format to gain access to the server:

http://www.server.com/workspace/

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for SharePoint Portal Server 2001. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

312963 How to Obtain the Latest SharePoint Portal Server 2001 Service Pack

The English version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later:

   Date Version Size File name
   -----------------------------------------------------
   20-Feb-2002 10.145.3914.5 1,288 KB Msonsext.dll

After you apply SharePoint Portal Server 2001 Service Pack 1 (SP1), add a computer name-Internet Protocol (IP) address mapping in the Domain Name System (DNS) or Hosts file (in addition to the FQDN mapping that you have for your server). When you install SharePoint Portal Server 2001 Service Pack 1 (SP1) on an SharePoint Portal Server computer, it does not update the client installer to SP1. Instead, it adds the SP1 installer in a different directory on the server. You must also install the SP1 installer on the client.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2001 Service Pack 1.

MORE INFORMATION

If you are using Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) to gain access to your server, SharePoint Portal Server 2001 SP1 does not resolve this problem.
