SYMPTOMS
When you are installing Microsoft Office XP on Microsoft Windows 98, you may receive the following error message:
CAUSE
This error message can occur when the Office Setup program detects an incorrect version of the Advapi32.dll file.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, use the Windows 98 System File Checker program to manually extract Advapi32.dll from the \Win98 folder of the Windows 98 CD. To do this, follow these steps:
- Click Start, click Run, and then type Sfc.exe in the Open box. Click OK.
- Select Extract one file from installation disk.
- Type advapi32.dll and then click Start.
- In Restore From, locate the Win98 folder on the Windows 98 CD-ROM, and then click OK.
- Verify that the file is being saved in C:\Windows\System, and then click OK.
- When you are prompted, restart your computer.
- Run the Setup program for Office XP.

When you install Microsoft Office XP, you may receive the error message in the "Symptoms" section of this article. When you review the Setup installation log file, you see the following error text in the verbose log file:
Error 2737. An internal error has occurred. (CheckCAServer C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\MSI2A3.TMP CheckCAServer ) MSI (c) (CF:BB): Product: Microsoft Office XP Professional with FrontPage -- Error 2737. An internal error has occurred. (CheckCAServer C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\MSI2A3.TMP CheckCAServer ) Action ended 10:33:02: CheckCAServer. Return value 3.
Note You may also see error 1723 in the verbose log file. The resolution for error 1723 is the same as the resolution for error 2737.
Error 1723. There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A DLL required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor. Action CheckCAServer, entry: CheckCAServer, library: C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\MSI53A1.TMP MSI (c) (7D:A5): Product: Microsoft Office XP Standard -- Error 1723.
