SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to publish changes to a FrontPage Web, you cannot connect to the Web server and receive an error message similar to the following:

Unable to connect to a server at location on port 80 (socket code 10054)

CAUSE

You receive this error message when your connection to the server times out and is reset. This can occur in one of the following situations:

  • The TCP/IP network configuration on your computer is corrupted.
  • The Web content that you attempt to publish is corrupted.

The Winsock Error code 10054 (WSAECONNRESET) indicates a "Connection reset by peer."

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the following methods in the order that are shown.

Method 1: Reinstall TCP/IP

NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, double-click Network.
  3. On the Configuration tab, click TCP/IP in the The following network components are installed list, and then click Remove.
  4. Repeat step 3 for all TCP/IP components in the list.

    NOTE: The TCP/IP network components may appear in the following format:

    TCP/IP ->Network Adapter
    TCP/IP ->Dial-Up Adapter

  5. Click OK.

    You receive the following message:

    You must restart your computer before the new settings will take
    effect.
    Do you want to restart your computer now?

  6. Click No. Insert a Windows Startup disk, and then restart the computer to a command prompt.
  7. At the command prompt, type C:, and then press ENTER.
  8. Type CD\Windows\, and then press ENTER.
  9. Type Del WINSOCK.DLL, and then press ENTER.
  10. Type CD\Windows\System, and then press ENTER.
  11. Type Del WSOCK32.DLL, and then press ENTER.
  12. Remove the Windows Startup disk, and then restart the computer.
  13. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  14. In Control Panel, double-click Network.
  15. In the Network dialog box, on the Configuration tab, click Add.
  16. Click Protocol, and then click Add.
  17. In the Manufacturers list, click Microsoft. In the Network Protocols list, click TCP/IP, click OK twice, and then click Yes to restart the computer.

Method 2: Remove Corrupt Web Content

This issue can occur when the FrontPage Web that you attempt to publish contains corrupt content. Delete and then re-create the pages of the Web that you want to publish.
