SUMMARY
Although Microsoft does not recommend it, it is possible to install and use more than one version of Microsoft Visio on a single computer. For example, you can install and use both Microsoft Visio 2000 Service Release 1 (SR-1) and Microsoft Visio 5.0 on the same computer.
This article describes the problems you may encounter when you do this, and offers advice on how to prevent different versions of Visio from conflicting with each other.
MORE INFORMATION
Order of Installation
If you want to install and use more than one version of Visio on the same computer, install the earliest version first. For example, if you want to use both Visio 5.0 and Visio 2000 on the same computer, install Visio 5.0 first. This order is necessary because of the way Visio manages registry keys, file name extensions, and other settings for each version.
The following table shows the order in which to install different versions of Visio:
Visio Installation version order --------------------------- 5.0 First 2000 Second
The remainder of this article assumes that you installed the versions of Visio in this order.
Visio Folder Location Is Program Files\Visio
When you install Visio 2000, the default folder for Setup is "Program Files\Visio". The default folder for Visio 5.0 is also "Program Files\Visio". Choose a different folder location for Visio 2000, such as "Program Files\Visio2000".
Double-Click Behavior of Drawing Files in Windows Explorer
When you double-click an Visio drawing in Windows Explorer, or click a drawing from the recent documents folder in Windows, the following rules apply:
- If a version of the program is running, the drawing opens in that version.
- If no version of the program is running, the drawing opens in the version of the program that you most recently installed.
-or-
The drawing opens in the last version of the program that was running. Every time you start the Visio program, it registers itself as the version to load a drawing with.
To reassociate drawings with a particular version of Visio, start that version, or run the Visio Setup program and click Repair. Doing this registers the file associations for that version of Visio.
